Spirit-filled Craftsmen

It is within the very heart of OT redemptive history that we see culturative specialization truly come into its own. During the construction of the tabernacle and Solomonic temple, God called specific gifted individuals to lead the effort: Bezalel and Aholiab in the case of the tabernacle, and Hiram in the case of the temple…. Of Bezalel it is said that God “has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and understanding, in knowledge and manner of all workmanship” (Ex. 35:31; cf. 1 Kgs. 7:14). The variety of occupations used in the building of the tabernacle and temple is astounding: lumbermen, carpenter, spinners, dyers, weaver, embroiderers, seamstresses, foundry workers and metrallurgists, goldsmiths, engravers, jewelers, tanners, perfumers, quarry workers, and stone masons…. The gracious circumstances of OT redemption are a resounding celebration of vocational diversity and human skill.
